Abstract:

The aim of this study is to evaluate the complications after the esophagus reconstruction for the postcaustic stenosis.

Material and method: We made a retrospective analysis of 116 cases operated in the Clinic of Surgical Emergencies Iasi, from 1st of January 1982 to 30th of June 2004.

In 12 cases intraoperative complications appeared, affecting the cardiovascular and respiratory status. 47 patients (40,51%) develop postoperative complications. Immediate postoperative morbidity rate was 22.41% (26 patients): pleural effusion, laryngeal nerve damage, cervical anastomotic leak. Late postoperative morbidity rate was 21.55% (25 patients) – stenosis of the cervical anastomosis. Postoperative mortality was 4,3%.

Conclusions: The esophagus reconstructions have a high rate of postoperative morbidity. Anastomotic leak and anastomotic stenosis are the most important complications and their management is very difficult.
