Abstract:

Surgical emergencies have different presentation at the elderly patients. Aim: To evaluate the characteristics of the emergency suirgery – especially of the intestinal obstruction – at the elderly patients. Methods: Retrospective study performed from 1995 to 2004 in Botoşani Country Hospital. Results: 1013 elderly patients were operated for acute surgical abdomen. Intestinal obstruction is the second cause of acute surgical abdomen in the elderly, after acute peritonitis – 36.82%. The aethiology of the intestinal obstruction at the elderly were: complicated hernias and incisional hernias (44.24%), malignant tumours (24.40%), volvulus (16.35%) and adherences (14.21%). Elderly women had more frequent intestinal obstruction that the men (54.16 vs 44.84%). An increase postoperative mortality rate was noted at the elderly especially in the group with late operations. Conclusion: The acute intestinal obstruction is the second cause of surgical emergencies at the elderly; late operations were associated with increase rate of postoperative mortality.
