Abstract:

Between January, 2000 and August, 2007 in the 3rd Surgical Unit of the „St. Spiridon” Hospital of Iaşi 1300 operations were performed for thyroid disorders, 240 of which were performed for the thyroid cancer and 1300 for benign disorders. The diagnosis was confirmed by hystopathological examination (including frozen section exam). The patients had a median age of 51.48 years old (range 19-81 years). The thzroid cancer was more frequent at the women (sex ratio F:M = 2.15:1). Total thyroidectomy with radical or modified radical neck dissection was performed in 21 cases. The postoperative morbidity was 2.4%: postoperative haemorrhagies with reoperations for haemostasis in 7 cases and unilateral recurrent laryngeal nerve injury in 3 patients. We also reported reccurency in the first two years in 5 patients. Total thyroidectomy with frozen section exam and radical neck dissection when is necessary became the ellective method for thyroid cancer, and the best results were for females patients over 55 years old, with papillary cancer.
