Abstract:

The liver is a frequent site of metastatic colorectal disease. Over the past 20 years, improvements in systemic chemotherapy and surgical techniques have improved the survival of patients with hepatic metastases. Hepatic metastases derive most of their blood supply from the hepatic artery; therefore, for patients with hepatic metastases from colorectal cancer, hepatic arterial infusion (HAI) of chemotherapy may improve outcome. Methods We have a retrospective study, from january 1993 to decembre 2006, when, from 117 patients with hepatic metastasis, 9 cases with hepatic metastasis from colorectal cancer receive HAI and systemic chemotherapy. Results Reduction of the tumor size were observed in the HAI group at the 3- and 6-month follow-up assessments, in 8 cases. The mean diameter of hepatic metastasis were decreased from 40-60 mm to 20 mm. In one case no change observed. Conclusions HAI therapy associated with sistemic chemotherapy may improve outcome, but additional studies need to develop a multidisciplinary team approach that can design the best treatment plan for patients with liver metastases from colorectal cancer.
