Abstract:

The history of the endocrine surgery is recent, with the discovery of glands and hormones at the beginning of the twentieth century. Most of the major endocrine glands were described anatomically around 1900. The hormones were identified during the first decades of the twentieth century. In 1922 a Romanian doctor, Paulescu, discovered a hypoglycemiant hormone, the insulin. Other hormones like aldosterone and cortisol were discovered after a few years. The diffuse gastrointestinal glandular system was characterized in the 1950s when these hormones were described. The development of the nuclear medicine in the 1960s facilitated the development of the endocrinology and allowed the precise measurement of the circulating levels of the hormones. In these years, surgeons and physicians described the endocrine syndromes: Conn syndrome (Jerome Conn 1954), carcinoid syndrome (Rosenbaum, Isler & Heldinger 1954), Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia (MEN I - Wermer 1954, MEN II - John Sipple 1961) etc. The improvements of the surgical preparation and techniques, the new methods (like laparoscopic surgery), allowed the extending of the radical surgery, with less morbidity and mortality. In the present days, scientists are identifying the genetic changes of the endocrine syndromes and prophylactic surgery it is now possible.
