Abstract:

Free fibula flaps currently represent the preferred method for larger mandibular reconstruction. Based on our experiences, clinical evaluations such as advantages and problems of this reconstruction have been presented in this study. For 5years, from january 2006 to december 2010, subjectives of 8 fibular flaps in 8 patients were employed in our department. Primary reconstruction was undertaken in all the cases imediately after resection of extensive tumors. The radical resection of the tumor was obtained in six cases. Short term follow up (6-48 month) shows the presence of the tumor recurrence in two cases. The functional and aesthetical outcome was satisfactory and bone healing occurred without any major complication, excepting one case of skin paddle necrosis. The advantages offered by free fibula flap render it most adequate in reconstruction of extensive mandibular defects.
