Abstract:

Hip resurfacing arthroplasty represent an alternative surgical technique to conventional arthroplasty, mostly for younger patients, presently being in full development, whose main advantage is increased stability, reduced stress shielding in the proximal femur, preservation of femoral bone stock, and easier revision to a conventional stemmed femoral prosthesis if required. Hard metal on metal bearing surfaces offered excellent wear characteristics, an additional advantage in the younger, more active patient population. Younger patients with sufficient bone stock (under 55 yrs) are the ideal candidates for hip resurfacing. This is a retrospective study on 32 patients, during 1 Jan 2008 – 31 Dec 2010, accomplished in the Clinical Rehabilitation Hospital of Iaşi. The statistical interpretation of age related data and associated pathology demonstrates that this method of treatment is currently applied in younger and younger people with very good results and these patients are expected to outlive the lifespan of a conventional implant, therefore the need to preserve as much as possible from the bone stock for further revisions is a must.
