Abstract:

Postoperative mortality and morbidity remained unchanged during the last few years for some types of interventions. Sepsis and its severe consequences are results of a malfunctioning immune system, impaired by both lifestyle and disease.

Some simple measures are recommmended to prevent further deterioration of the immune system. Among these, modifications of the postoperative management are recommended: restricted use of the antibiotics, omission of the prophylactic gastric decompression, postoperative drainage and preoperative bowel preparation, restricted use of stored blood, supply of antioxidants, etc.

Nutrition control of postoperative morbidity is also important (enteral nutrition, synbiotics etc.).
